Recommendations from the RCMP public complaints commissionerPosted By THE CANADIAN PRESSPosted 1 day agoRecommendations on Mountie use of Tasers from RCMP public complaints commission report released Wednesday: Tasers be classified as "impact weapons" and used only to defuse situations posing risk of death or grievous bodily harm. People zapped with Tasers receive immediate medical attention "in all circumstances." --Establish clearer rules for using Tasers against "at-risk populations." Only Mounties with the rank of corporal or higher be allowed to use Tasers in urban settings; in rural settings, only constables with at least five years on the force be allowed to use the weapon. The RCMP rewrite the Taser reporting form to include much more detailed information, including a full description of relevant factors to explain why multiple or prolonged stuns were used. All RCMP divisions review and submit existing Taser reports to a national database. Create use-of-force co-ordinators to monitor and enforce reporting practices. Publicly release quarterly and annual reports on Taser use. Give public complaints commissioner "unvetted copies" of all Taser reports every month for next three years.
