May 2011

We are now less than a month away from the InnVision Garden Gala 2011 on Sunday,  June 5 from 2 to 5 pm at the beautiful home of our long-term supporters, Michele and John McNellis, in Atherton. Tickets are on sale NOW...don't miss your chance  to join the fun. Please purchase your tickets TODAY online at www.InnVision.org [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKliAHce4qc4OF6V80CKeI8Zf-QXegQ7b0b3IAvSXE2DuUKUQcZ7PrA-guyVIZ4dGbOKWnWDzFlHI4c4VN4sgGfR2GQhlyJWw_9ZA9212jUoSA==].

Our goal for the day is to have some fun while making a meaningful impact in the  lives of countless individuals and families in need of our support on the Peninsula. By simply attending our fundraiser, you will help us fund critical programs for those who are homeless, or at risk, on the Peninsula. We do hope you will consider joining us.

Our afternoon will include live music from Gypsy Tribe [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKlyO9-uOApj61niPQQkgsQQf9ZOuFQm4h8L-Oxdk3vXiRWua1ktuTNCCnO9mglcUjysWizOMD8va_3wlVAmKZfWt2f3sgpld1W4kXNOS9s5DA==], a special prize for the winner of a special game, and our live auction.

State Senator Joe Simitian will be in charge of the bidding as we auction off some fun packages to support programs on the Peninsula. In addition to the Stanford Sports and Coppola Winery packages we highlighted last month, we have several other fabulous packages you'll want to take home...if the price is right!

The proceeds from this event will support InnVision Peninsula Programs on the Mid-Peninsula: Opportunity Services Center, Hotel de Zink Shelter, Breaking Bread Hot Meals, Peninsula Inns, and the Palo Alto Food Closet.

Our Garden Gala is a wonderful chance to celebrate our success, connect with our  supporters and raise funds for those most in need in our community. If you can  attend, please click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKmxfnXOJhvQY5O_JBIvJ1fqm5u6oNDIeLAVt3EFet_0PF0rPhzbWfgpq6G3XZ_g-IRJwNYE5d1sg9hIR9bQEXlHGdedjvZqbzD5j6GSZ-bbLTZ0P0UGas44SrVwtCt2vNpASJPwJP3LOXNaoC2PGvXR-pLSXUBp5YL-7DT7pY4hXaWLzZWyJzZIBo1p5XJKBToZhgm8a3r2_Q==] to purchase your ticket today. Don't Forget Matching Gifts!

Innvision has many types of collaboration with businesses in our community. Corporate teams come in on Volunteer Days to take on projects such as organizing donations  or painting the shelters. Corporate grants provide key funding for healthcare programs, education for homeless children, and more.

Another source of support are Corporate Matching Gifts. Most employees do not even realize that their company will match their gift to a qualified nonprofit such as InnVision. Your company might also match your spouse or domestic partner's donation.  We have even seen companies that provide 3:1 matching. That is, they give $3 for every $1 you give.

Companies are eager to increase participation in matching gift programs as part of their support of corporate social responsibility. A corporate HR director says, "We consider matching gifts to be a significant part of our overall benefits package because it ties our employees and company to our community while helping to improve our community. But unfortunately, only 20 or 30 percent of our employees take advantage of this!"

When you make a gift to InnVision, please think about leveraging your donation.

To find out if your employer has a matching gift program, check with your Human Resources department or look at your company's benefits package. Even if your company has been struggling recently, you might find that this benefit is still in place.

Georgia Travis Center Hosts Domestic Violence Information Event

On April 7, InnVision Georgia Travis Center (GTC) hosted the 18th Domestic Violence Information and Resource Collaborative (DVIR) event. The DVIR events have been occurring quarterly for nearly 5 years and this is the 3rd such event hosted by InnVision GTC.

Coordinated by Judge Erika Yew and the Santa Clara County Office of Women's Policy, it included dozens of agency resource providers, such as domestic violence shelters, pro bono legal services, custody and child support application assistance providers.  A panel of judges, lawyers, advocates, and law enforcement answered questions about domestic violence issues - immigration, probation, mandatory treatment, and child custody.

Almost 150 people attended this event, where transportation, dinner, child care,  and simultaneous translation were provided in addition to the myriad resources.   A feature of the evening was a teddy bear clinic for the seventeen small children who were in the separate child care area, who learned about what to do and who to talk to when you are hurt or not feeling well.

Explaining the history and goal of DVIR events, Judge Yew says, "We started DVIR  in 2006 to help families connect with resources in our county. We wanted victims of domestic violence and their children, as well as perpetrators, to receive comprehensive intervention and services. When I was presiding over criminal domestic violence  cases in the early 2000's it was clear to me that people were struggling with not only violence, but also often with poverty, homelessness, addiction, unemployment, language access, mental health and other issues. Inn Vision has been a great partner in the DVIR collaborative. With its Georgia Travis One Stop Center, Inn Vision is a place where people can be screened and connected to shelter, housing, food,  clothing and other essential services."

Chad Bojorquez "Voluntarism at Its Best"

Voluntarism at Its Best - Chad

InnVision volunteer Chad Bojorquez has received the coveted

"Voluntarism At Its Best" award [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKnbsKDWWWFWVEuWWa92Oq28oOwqkXmCJJqr8tFkNgTJX6KbJiE-ynhdLbkgeDYU1kgrDQ-0A7NAH9UusKaAIMk215sMYDmGZHDfpOC_kA1pageJh6vDD-hSyvH-CJE1df9FmFEY2eHq5A==], the top honor, at the

Junior League of San Jose's 42nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon (VRL) held on April 29, 2011 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Chad's year-long efforts have made a meaningful difference to thousands of individuals and families at the InnVision Georgia Travis Center in San Jose, and he has won the Silver Bowl award  because of his amazing commitment.

To quote sponsor Jaynie Neveras, "Rain or shine, Chad arrives at the Georgia Travis Center with a smile on his face, five days a week. He is enormously dependable, and running our programs would be difficult without him. "

Chad with Kerry DeHority (InnVision Board), Christine Burroughs (InnVision CEO), Loan Nguyen (InnVision Board), Dan Coonan (InnVision Board chair).

The amount of time that Chad volunteers for the Georgia Travis Center, five days a week at 4-6 hours a day, is impressive. Combined with his dependability, variety of skills, and scope of work, it is extraordinary. However, when you realize that Chad has limited mobility and utilizes a motorized wheelchair to perform this volunteer effort, it is truly inspirational. Chad is resourceful and creative in performing tasks that individuals without physical limitations can easily carry out, and his creative and positive energy make him essential to the team.

Christine Burroughs, CEO of InnVision, is "thrilled that such a deserving volunteer was recognized at the annual luncheon. Chad is an inspiration to everyone around him and we are very grateful for his dedication and service to those most in need in Silicon Valley." Chad is the only Silver Bowl award winner among almost 100 individuals recognized for their outstanding voluntarism.

Mental Health Day
On a beautiful afternoon in May, InnVision Julian Street Inn (JSI) held their Mental Health Day celebration with the theme "The Gift of Giving." Program Director Lorena Collins recognized Jim Gardner of Good Karma Bikes [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKmC08Ly2PPmnKTqRiDoB8FYY7o1kX21IC0lC7cQRUfDkCBz5GzrSf-X6hZKLW35wmIAQXpB8dZpoH64ucs7tKB0vYRh2iFBpwg1dOdGDkz39SmETyvZOBcc] for his hundreds of hours of service at the InnVision Montgomery Street Inn (MSI).  Every Saturday, rain or shine, Jim is there in the MSI parking lot fixing bicycles for the clients, showing them how to maintain their bicycles, and training them in bike repair. For these clients, a bike is their only way to get around independently. Jim told the audience his response when clients offer to pay him for his work, "I tell them please pass it on. From the MSI parking lot, we're changing the world!" Our other honoree at the event was Martha Barenbrugge of Momentum for Mental Health [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6kpz6mcab&et=1105326266373&s=12017&e=001z9EV2Tv8BKmp1Bwn_mAS7U58q4hQLX1P9NEnAL9a1-Y_1jN9bz0p8Vpn7Zo3NRTdplxhbvwYJmW6hXofEkyBKYTEtPu6jIQVfkeQHIaFUJrCjfuF87CPVeFVnz4zAnIYWPm75HMl7oTYxrQg0gNFsMZlX27iVFzb], recognized for nearly 20

years of service to clients at JSI. Explaining her dedication tothe program, Martha said, "JSI clients have little but share what they have.
