(1/29) Event: Caltrain summit

Caltrain is facing a severe fiscal crisis next year. Although it is one of the highest performing Bay Area transit agencies, is the only agency that lacks dedicated funding. Caltrain carries equivalent to more than three full 101 lanes during rush hour. Caltrain is critical to our quality of life, commute alternatives, and economic vitality.

At the Caltrain Summit on January 29,

(BayRail is a member and sponsor of) is bringing together riders, residents, voters, environmentalists, businesses - to discuss solutions and start working together to make the solutions happen. The goals of this summit are:

  1. To educate public about Caltrain's story: that it is a successful regional rail system essential for our economic vitality, but it lacks dedicated funding
  2. To stimulate thinking about possible solutions, including cost containment, local and/or regional revenue options, increasing ridership by improving service
  3. Build partnerships with neighborhood, cyclist, transit advocacy, environmental, employer, and other groups
  4. Empower grassroots groups with knowledge and tasks to take away
  5. Building and coordinating leadership for Caltrain in elected officials and grassroots groups across three counties

Date: Saturday, January 29, 2010 Time: 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Location: SamTrans Auditorium, 1250 San Carlos Avenue, San Carlos (near Caltrain)

Weekend Baby Bullet starts on January 1

Despite fare increases and weekday service reductions, Caltrain has announced that it will begin running Baby Bullet trains on weekends on a pilot basis for three months. Weekend express service has been sought after by many train riders and Caltrain is looking for ways to generate more revenue similar to the success of the weekday Baby Bullet trains introduced several years ago.

As Caltrain supporters, we applaud Caltrain for listening to riders and introducing the weekend express service. As successful as current weekend local service is, we believe that weekend express service will make the trains even more competitive with automobiles, especially among those who don't ride the trains during weekday commute hours.
