Mayoral election

Honorable Council Members,

In the course of making your decisions tonight regarding the next Mayor and Vice Mayor of Menlo Park, I hope that the discussion will be focused on which of you will be well qualified to serve in those roles for the next year, rather than on peripheral issues such as Council policy. If last week's election had focused on qualifications, you would have spared yourselves the embarrassing outcome of having selected an ethically unqualified Mayor.

In addition to the Mayor's ceremonial role, he or she also plays a significant role in shaping the public discussion of important issues. This flows from the Mayor's role in finalizing Council meeting agendas, leading those meetings, and serving as the primary Council interface to the press. I would hope that any Council Member who is nominated for these roles would provide a short summary of why they are well qualified to lead those public discussions, and stay away from telling us why they are entitled to the role by virtue of Council Policy. I think that you will make better choices for Mayor and Vice Mayor if you follow that sort of process.

Thanks to all of you for the time that you devote to Menlo Park.

Regards,

Frank Tucker
