Closed Session-Labor Negotiations

From: Rojas, Glen <grojas_at_(domain_name_was_removed)>
Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2010 11:51:52 -0800

In the spring of 2010 the City reached impasse in its negotiations with SEIU and the City Council voted to implement its last and best final offer. SEIU has requested a meeting with the City's negotiating team in early January to discuss how the impasse might be resolved. The purpose of tonight's closed session is not to secure any specific direction or approval regarding the City's negotiating position going into that meeting, but for staff to provide the City Council with information about the impasse, the City's past negotiating authority, legal requirements and implications for the upcoming meeting(s) with SEIU, and to determine what additional information the Council might need or want in order to provide the negotiating team with priorities and direction at some time in the future - not at tonight's meeting. The Council may also consider and provide direction on what public information/process to pursue before providing any specific direction to the negotiating team in the future.

No representatives of SEIU will be present during the closed session - only the City Council and its negotiating team and legal representatives will be present in the closed session. The public has the right to address the City Council prior to the closed session. The closed session will be held in the Council Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall at 701 Laurel Street starting at 5:30 PM.
