closed door meeting with SEIU

Honorable council members,

The agenda for Tuesday December 14 includes a closed session on labor negotiations. Beginning last year, council responded to public pleas for transparency by holding an open meeting prior to a closed meeting to openly present the issues and hear public concerns. This is the minimum that should be done for all union negotiations.

Please recall that, while council is permitted to hold closed door meetings on such negotiations, it is not required to do so, and indeed the public has asked council to make them open. Indeed, this year the residents have declared an unprecedented concern for the issue of employee compensation. The fire board has already made the change to open meetings, to the benefit of the public.

Transparency has been promised by the former council and by incoming council members, but council has not begun its first week that way. Please, maintain your commitment to the residents for open government.
