Re: Spraying on Alpine

100 ft. just doesn't do the job!  The stuff still flows down to the creek and is lethal to aquatic life and probably violates State laws which your City Attorney needs to research.  The spraying that I saw was right adjacent to the creek where there is a ditch that flows directly into San Francisquito.  The County has even banned all pesticides along Alpine Road and other areas because they are contiguous to the creek or within the watershed.  I am confident that there will be some fall out from environmental groups concerning this. There also needs to be public notification several days ahead of ANY intention to spray ANY area.

As I stated in my original email it was not City staff spraying, however I was notified yesterday afternoon that the spraying that occurred was performed by the landscape company Gachina who is contracted by the City of Menlo Park. Due to the lack of information about who was spraying, I am from this point forward restricting the use by City Staff and City contractors of any and all pesticides within a 100’ range of waterways, creeks and/or canals and requiring all City contractors to notify City staff in writing at least 24hrs in advance of any uses of pesticides. I agree that the use of pesticides directly adjacent to the canal is unacceptable and I am grateful for you bringing this to our attention so that we are able to address it and prevent it from occurring again.      Last June we also placed a restriction on the use of Round Up within a 100’ range of; daycares, schools, picnic areas and playgrounds and we began a test section for the use and effectiveness of different types of weed abatement treatments which will be presented to the EQC and the City Council in May as part of our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy modifications.    Jesse T. Janet & Councilmember Keith, I have confirmed that this was a not a City of Menlo Park crew. I have also spoken with the City of Palo Alto and confirmed that it was not their crews either. I also have a call into the County of San Mateo and I will respond back once I hear from them. Stanford has also confirmed that they have not used tankers to spray any pesticides in the area, however they did utilize a tanker truck in this area on Thursday the 12th to apply a liquid fertilizer to a tree. Additionally, PG&E contractors have been using water trucks to spray water on the newly seeded areas near Rural Lane. Jesse T.
