Dear members,
I have a slight adjustment to what I wrote below.  I wrote that I supported the bike plan of the latest staff plan, but I'd be fine with the staff plan that contain 5 foot sidewalks rather than the wider sidewalks in the bike commission plan, as long as the bike buffer is retained for the ENTIRE length. It's really just the deletion of the bike buffer in certain areas, to protect heritage trees, that I think is a huge mistake.  Perhaps there's some other way in those areas to protect the trees AND keep the bike buffer.  I  haven't looked at the area in person, but can you wrap the sidewalk around the other side of the trees so you can keep the area for bike lane and buffer?  If not, then perhaps another option is to narrow the sidewalk in those few areas.  People would need to walk single file there but at least they wouldn't be exposed to traffic the way the kids on bikes would be. If these options aren't possible, then I really think you need to sacrifice the trees to protect human life.

Dear Council Members,
Thanks so much for investing thought, time and finances into this important project.
While I won't be able to attend the meeting on Tuesday, I do want to take this opportunity to communicate my support of the recommended plan by the Bike Commission (as opposed to the final plan recommended by the staff)
While I understand the desire to protect heritage trees and where possible, the landscaping some homeowners have placed on city property, I think it's a huge mistake to not include a bicycle buffer in areas where heritage trees exist.  The current parking lane, which is almost never used, in essence serves as an important safety buffer between bicyclists and cars. (while we live right off Valparaiso near El Camino, I tell my children that when they're on bikes and need to head West to get to school, etc., that they should ride on Santa Cruz, rather than Valparaiso, because there's a buffer (the parking lane) between them and the cars.  Cars are constantly veering into the bike lane, either to get around other cars or simply because they're not paying attention.
Taking out the parking lane and not replacing it with a buffer for the ENTIRE length of the corridor will be a huge mistake.  As a council,  I can't imagine you value heritage trees over human safety.  However, if you vote for the final recommended plan over the bike commission plan, that's what you'll be doing. I urge you to think about your priorities, and vote for the safer Bike commission plan.  Thank you!
