Santa Cruz Sidewalks

Honorable Council Members,

I would like to express my support for alternative 2, 5' sidewalks on both
sides of the street that maintains parking. Maintenance of parking is
critical to the Santa Cruz homeowners who may not have enough parking on
site and are currently dependent on it with no alternatives. Automobiles are
and will be our overwhelmingly dominant mode of transportation into the
forseeable future. To minimize the conflict between bicycles and parked cars
I suggest the pedestrian sidewalk and a line of protective trees shield a
bike lane next to the private property rather than locating the bike lane on
the automobile traffic side of the sidewalk. Parked cars can then come and
go during the day without interfering with bicycle traffic that, we hope,
will increase.

To create the space necessary for this modified alternative the City should
go into its right of way as required on the private property sides.

The vision of a continuously tree lined Santa Cruz Avenue that protects
pedestrians and bicycles while maintaining parking is so compelling that a
minor loss of landscaping from private yards in the right of way is a small
price to pay.

Thank you for the consideration.
