Bedwell Bayfront Park

Over the 34 years I have lived in Menlo Park, I have loved walking in Bedwell Bayfront Park. However, now that I am in my 70’s, I have become aware that this park is not senior-friendly, in that there are no benches along the whole lower perimeter walk, which is the one most accessible to older folks.

Shoreline Park in Mountain View and the Palo Alto Baylands both have a number of benches situated along the paths, making them both excellent choices for seniors wanting a place to walk. These benches appear to be part of a “donate a bench as a memorial” program, as most honor someone. As you walk in both the Palo Alto and Mountain View baylands parks you see many seniors. It is rare to see seniors at Bedwell Park. Could it be that’s because there are no benches along the whole two-mile walk?

I would like to request that the Council and the Parks Department make benches in Bedwell Park along the perimeter walk a priority. Perhaps a memorial bench program would be one way to help defray the cost, although in relation to the whole budget for parks I would think 5 or 6 benches would be a drop in the bucket, so to speak.

I have submitted this request also to the Parks Department also ... it is Case # 19843

Thank you.
