Sidewalks on Santa Cruz

Honorable Council Members,

I have lived on Cotton Street for the past 38 years, near Santa Cruz Avenue, and I am writing to express my support for the long-overdue installation of sidewalks on both sides of Santa Cruz, to be considered at your meeting on March 10th. This project is important, not only for the Hillview kids currently walking in the street twice a day, but also for residents from the surrounding neighborhoods to be able to walk to downtown safely.

Unfortunately, other interests have come forward in an attempt to expand the scope of this “sidewalk” project to include a re-design of the pavement of the street itself. At last count, there are seven “options” under consideration.

The last time the Transportation Commission attempted to re-design Santa Cruz Avenue for us, we got bulbouts, refuge islands, and all sorts of other “street furniture” installed that rendered the street almost impassable. After a short “trial” period, it was all removed at considerable expense and the street was restored to its present configuration. The present configuration continues to provide adequate and efficient motoring, biking, and parking. The only deficiency in the present configuration is the lack of sidewalks for pedestrians.

Please, do not consider any changes to the existing pavement! Because the City owns an additional 5.5 feet of right-of-way on both sides of the street, this is the perfect place for the new sidewalks! I realize that some residents along Santa Cruz who have installed “improvements” on City property in front of their homes will try to preserve them by various tactics, but Council’s responsibility is to represent the majority of the residents and to be good stewards of our City property.

Therefore, I strongly support “Alternative 2,” preserving the present time-tested street configuration and adding sidewalks in the City right-of-way on both sides of the street.

Jim Harvey
960 Cotton Street
