Father Shares Thanks for Helping Young Daughter's Recovery

My name is Michael Lehman. I would like to start with brief details of my upbringing and how it has affected my life today, good and bad to success.

I grew up in a very dysfunctional household; my father died when I was seven and my mother fell into addiction. Due to my mother’s addiction, and being a single parent, finances were slim. Poverty struck my family and hit us hard. I remember going to school and not being able to focus or apply myself, always worrying about home and all the dysfunction that went along with it; education, hygiene, support, etc. were affected.

I am now 27-years old and a single parent myself, and I understand how hard it is to raise a kid on my own. I can relate to my mother in a lot of areas now that I am a single father, and have cleaned up my own addictions just like my mother. I am currently living at Haven Family House where I reside with my mother and daughter. I still have to clean up from all the wreckage I have caused—such as credit. I had to teach myself a lot through trial and error, which has affected my life today.

My daughter, Summer, is two going on 22 and is the pride and joy of my life. My daughter, like myself, was born into not the best situation and it affected her upbringing at a real early age. Due to some very drastic events, my daughter is diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her mother is not a big part of her life, but hopefully that will change in the near future. My daughter, due to the PTSD and events, suffers from severe nightmares amongst other things, and it has been really hard to cope for her and myself. I currently have her in therapy and in Peninsula Family Service’s child development center (CDC) at Haven House where we all work very diligently (on the same page) to help Summer through her PTSD and help with development skills. I have to say, my daughter is the true success story here. We have both been through a lot together and here we are, getting the help we need to be a self-sufficient family unit.

I would like to say thank you to Peninsula Family Service, Haven House, and InnVision Shelter Network for giving me all the support and help needed, it is greatly appreciated. I know I made it this far through love, care, passion, and sacrifice, understanding life will get better as long as I do not quit and always put my best foot forward.
