Andy - thanks for loving Burgess Park as much as we do. The Menlo Park Civic Center campus, including Burgess Park, was formerly a part of Camp Fremont, which was built during preparation for possible entry into World War I<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I> as a post on the west coast to train National Guard<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_National_Guard> units for combat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Fremont. The current Park area then became another military installation, Dibble General Hospital, in 1943, to care for the thousands of soldiers injured in the South Pacific in World War II.
After the war a post war boom occurred in Menlo Park. Under the leadership of farsighted Charles P. Burgess (Mayor of the City from 1945 to 1953), the City acquired 29 acres of Dibble General Hospital grounds at a price of $4,000 an acre. On this land a handsome civic center was erected in the 1960's. The Burgesses were a long time Menlo Park family. http://menloparkchamber.com/life-in-menlo-park/history/

Subject: A Quick Question

Dear City Council,
I love Burgess park and have a quick question about it. Can you tell me who Burgess Park and its nearby streets were named after? And if so, do you know how that came to be?
Thank you kindly,
-Andy (Formerly of 432 Laurel St though I've briefly relocated)
