RE: Safe Routes to School funding for Laurel Upper Campus

Hi Tricia,

Thank you for your email and consideration of school traffic and circulation issues for the future Laurel Upper Campus.

The City is currently leading a focused plan for improvements to access for walking, biking and vehicle traffic to the new school. This effort will be kicked off on Thursday evening, at 6pm in the Laurel School Multi-purpose Room (on Edge Road in Atherton), with an opportunity for feedback on the issues that the City has heard to-date. The Cities of East Palo Alto and Menlo Park have also been awarded grant funds to provide bicycle markings, signage, close sidewalk gaps and crosswalk enhancements in association with the opening of the new school. We will present information on these modifications on Thursday as well.

At this time, we do not have funds allocated for a full Safe Routes to School Plan for the Laurel Upper School area. In order to complete such a Plan, it would need to be programmed into the City's Capital Improvement Plan for an upcoming fiscal year, and another project would need to be delayed to allow resources (both staff time and funds) to be allocated to it.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Nikki

Subject: Safe Routes to School funding for Laurel Upper Campus

Dear City Council,

As a Measure W co-chair, I have been involved in and continue to follow developments around the Laurel School Upper Campus.

It is my understanding that in order for Safe Routes to School to be assessed, it must first be funded by the City.

It is important that this groundwork be laid now so that routes are outlined and communicated upon the new school opening, so as to reinforce the behavior and bike / pedestrian routes that are safest.

Please let me know the process for the City to fund a Safe Route to School study for Laurel Upper Campus. We've known since last November that this school would be opening in August 2016 so maybe this study is already funded and in plan - I hope so!

Best regards,
Tricia Barr
