Wallea stop sign proposal (item F1 on the Aug 26 agenda)

Honorable City Council,

I live on Cathy Place, off of Wallea Drive. I have never seen a close call at either end of Wallea when it intersects with San Mateo Drive in the 30 years I have lived in my home. My experience is that the number of dog walkers and bicycle riders each typically outnumbers the cars on my drives. However, my friends who raise this issue are neither delusional nor dramatic, so I believe them that there is an issue.

As the staff report mentions, there is currently no signage at all. I believe that stop signs are a heavier-handed approach than are needed, and may cause unintended consequences like those using Wallea as their bike path not stopping at the stop signs and therefore creating more rather than less uncertainty at intersections.

I would ask that the Council consider and vote for informing drivers as the first step. I noted over the weekend signs in two different Bay Area cities that said, "Cross traffic does not stop", for example, which could be placed appropriately on both Wallea and San Mateo Drive. The addition of a yellow "Slow" sign in the standard diamond shape of warning signs might be helpful also. This, of course, assumes that "Yield" signs are, indeed, not possible.

Thank you for considering my plea for a lighter impact approach than the stop signs. I am sorry not to be able to attend tonight's meeting and appreciate your taking my e-mail into consideration.

Best regards,
Anne Perlman
