Scam Alert

Dear Chamber Members and Downtown Businesses,

Please take a moment to read the following statement from Sgt. Matthew Ortega regarding an invalid PG&E scam that has targeted Menlo Park businesses:

Hello Menlo Park Business Owners and Operators,

Menlo Park businesses have been falling victim of a new fraudulent scam. An unknown person has been calling local business and advising them that he or she works for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The party informs the business that they have an outstanding account balance. The party will then advise the business owner that if there is no payment credited to the account they will have their power shut off in one hour.
According to the PG&E, a letter will be sent 7 days prior to any disconnection of power, a 24 hour notice will be sent to the business and an automated phone call will be sent to the business advising of the disconnection or methods of payment to prevent the disconnection of power. At no time will a live operator contact the business demanding payment. The types of tender for payments to PG&E are credit, debit, pre-paid gift cards and electronic checks. There will never be a request for money orders or money transfers to a Pay Pal account. All PG&E employees will be wearing PG&E uniforms and will have a badge identifying who they are.

Thank You,

Sgt. Matthew Ortega
