Proposed irrigation well for the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club

I am emailing to express my concern for the proposed irrigation well for
the Sharon Heights Golf and County Club. In addition to being a Menlo Park
resident, I am also a groundwater researcher at Stanford University working
in the University's Water in the West program.

Water is a precious resource in the State of California, a notion that has
become particularly evident during this time of drought. As such we need to
treating our water resources with the utmost care and respect. The idea of
exploiting an untapped water source for a luxury activity, over recycled
water is both short-sighted and irresponsible. Withdrawal from groundwater
aquifers can have serious environmental impacts including: land subsidence
and saltwater intrusion (as was seen in San José in the early to mid
1900's); reduction of baseflow of surface waters, like the San Francisquito
Creek; and degradation of ecosystems relying on the groundwater aquifer.
These are all external costs that will ultimately be borne by the residents
of Menlo Park not the Sharon Heights Golf and County Club. This water
source is a public resource that should, if used, be used to the benefit of
the community as a whole.

Thank you,
