Re: Att. Kirsten Keith -- flood control, yes; flood walls, no

Dear Mr. Meyer,

Thank you for writing to express your concern with floodwalls upstream (west) of Highway 101. Please know that I share your concern. When this issue was raised previously, I expressed my belief that floodwalls would have severe negative impacts to our neighborhood and that they are a non-starter.

Please also know that tonight<x-apple-data-detectors://0> the Menlo Park City Council is NOT considering action related to floodwalls or any other potential work UPSTREAM of Highway 101.

Tonight<x-apple-data-detectors://1>, the only action we are considering is whether to authorize the City Manager to sign an agreement that enables the construction of a project on the creek between the Bay and Highway 101 separating Palo Alto and East Palo Alto. There are planned floodwalls for this Bay-Highway 101 portion that has seen repeated flooding, and this issue has been extensively discussed and agreed to by those cities.

Again, thank you for your email. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

To the members of the Menlo Park City Council:

Please remove from the proposal regarding the flood-control measures for San Francisquito Creek the few words referring to the erection of flood walls. It is possible to safeguard the communities living along the creek without erecting ugly walls that would prevent us from enjoying the creek. I and my wife walk our dogs almost everyday along Woodland Avenue; we enjoy the beauty of the creek and of the trees on its banks.

I am mindful of the concerns of our neighbors in East Palo Alto and Palo Alto, but they can be addressed by the alternatives to the flood walls that have already been proposed.

Please protect our creek, our trees, the pleasure we derive from them.

Should you have a position on the question of the flood walls, I would be glad to hear it.
