A Quest for Democracy in Sacramento

Hundreds of formerly incarcerated people press CA lawmakers for
action

On May 19, hundreds of formerly incarcerated people and their loved
ones traveled to Sacramento for the second annual Quest for Democracy
lobby day, organized by Legal Services for Prisoners with Children -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CenteronJuvenileandC/58536e6fdc/5b867647d4/5d22d25d38 and other organizations. CJCJ was honored to co-sponsor the event.

This year's lobbying efforts focused on 16 bills that impact
incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people and their communities,
including legislation that would remove barriers to reentry,
eliminate sentencing disparities -

juvenile records -

Throughout the day, participants shared their deep and comprehensive
expertise on criminal justice policy and its human consequences with
lawmakers, providing a crucial perspective that is otherwise rarely
encountered in the corridors of the capitol.

The award recognizes
community leaders who are making a difference in the lives of
formerly incarcerated people.

For more than two years, Patsy has been providing intensive case
management for clients who have been incarcerated for violent
offenses, helping them reconnect with their families and communities
and building a network of resources that address their individual
needs and goals.

The awards ceremony will take place in July. Please join us in
congratulating Patsy for this well-deserved recognition of her
dedicated service to our community!

Help CJCJ Oppose Mandatory Minimums for Youth

Juvenile mandatory minimum bill moves forward in state legislature

SB 838 (Beall), which would impose a mandatory minimum sentence for
youth convicted of certain sex offenses, has passed the state Senate
and will soon be heard in the state Assembly. If this bill passes, it
would set a new precedent for mandatory minimums in the juvenile
justice system — and have catastrophic consequences for youth and
for public safety in California.

California's juvenile justice system is focused on providing
individualized care, treatment, and guidance to young people who have
committed offenses, with the overarching goal of rehabilitating youth
and helping them lead productive and law-abiding lives. Harsh,
arbitrary minimums are absolutely incongruent with this approach to
juvenile justice, and study after study has failed to find evidence
that they improve public safety.
