What is your vision for the future of Palo Alto? We have been asking
this question as part of the conversations in the Our Palo Alto meetings
hosted by the City to create a community dialogue. Also as part of Our Palo
Alto, the City is beginning the process of _updating its Comprehensive
Plan_

-status-update) to 2030, and now is the time to think and plan for future
generations of Palo Altans. Please join the conversation.
The City’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 1998, is its primary tool for
guiding future development, and includes the City’s official vision on land
use, housing, circulation, natural resources, economics and public
services. A crucial component to the update process is going to be robust
community engagement. We want your thoughts, ideas and input on the Palo Alto
you envision for the future.
At Our Palo Alto’s inaugural “Who Are We” event, more than 75 community
members came out to hear about the demographic and economic trends
affecting our community and region. What will the changes in population mean for
the City’s future? If you missed the event and are curious about the
makeup of Palo Altans, click _here_ (http://lin

As rents and home prices continue to soar in Silicon Valley and the
entire Bay Area, the issue of housing affordability is a pressing one at the
moment. It was also the subject of two recent Our Palo Alto discussions.
Dozens of people attended the Housing Affordability roundtables as part of
the Housing Element update to discuss housing options, with many also
sharing personal stories on the struggles they are facing in today’s high-priced
housing and rental market. This community input is critical as we
consider policy decisions which guide future development, infrastructure
improvements and services. The Council will review a draft of the Housing Element
in June with final decisions expected to be made in November. In case you

Stay tuned for more as Our Palo Alto develops its community engagement
plan for the Comprehensive Plan update process. Along with a variety of
community engagement tools and techniques, the City is also putting together a
Community Leadership Group consisting of 12 to 15 people who will assist
staff with the planning and community engagement effort. Applications and
information on how to become a member of the group will be posted at

.
I am also excited about joining the Neighbors Abroad trip to our sister
city Oaxaca, Mexico. In June, several of us from the City Council and City
Manager Jim Keene will be visiting and meeting with Oaxaca’s City Council,
the Neighbors Abroad Committee in Oaxaca, and visiting many of our
partnership agencies.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of our relationship with Oaxaca, a
city that lies 350 miles southeast of Mexico City and is the capital of the
mountainous state of Oaxaca. Over the years, our two cities have
collaborated in numerous ways working together on Nino-a-Nino, a successful
child-to-child health program, and the Albergue Infantil Josefino, a home for
orphaned, abandoned and abused children. Palo Alto and Oaxaca have also had
an annual student exchange since 1965, a year after our sister city
relationship was forged.
Look for tales of our travels in the next Mayor’s newsletter.
