Last year's event attracted more than 90,000 people and this year we plan to return
to the Civic Center / Little Saigon area! We will be in front of the Asian Art
Museum, a dynamic area in an evolving neighborhood. The festival is centrally
located and convenient via both MUNI and BART - and the freeway.
The food deadline has passed. Only 5 spots left.

Asian Heritage Street Celebration Honors Bay Area Educators

by Tiffany Louie

Four outstanding educators from the Bay Area will be honored at this year's 10th

sponsored by Target, for their dedication in promoting cross-cultural diversity
in their communities. Each winner will be presented with a glass plaque and a gift
card onstage at the School Awards Ceremony inside the Asian Art Museum's Samsung
Hall on Saturday, May 17th. There will be a reception with light refreshments and
food for honorees and friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and the Ceremony will
begin at 11:00 a.m. This year's winners are dedicated and passionate in reaching
out to their respective communities in celebrating and sharing cultural diversity.
Here's a look at this year's winners.

Judy Chow, 1st Grade Teacher, Sunset Elementary School

Hosting an in-class Family Heritage Museum, coordinating the Multicultural Potluck
Lunch celebration and creating Lunar New Year art projects-these are just some of
the things that Judy Chow has done to educate and engage her colleagues and students
in celebrating multicultural diversity throughout the school year as a teacher at
Sunset Elementary School. In the classroom, her students are asked to bring in special
artifacts from their culture to present to the class and add to the Family Heritage
Museum. The museum is open to all students in the school, and families are invited
to bring in a cultural dish to share during the Multicultural Potluck Lunch Celebration.

Mark Huynh, Fine Arts Teacher and Coach, Galileo Academy of Science and Technology

Mark Huynh graduated from Galileo as the senior class president and back-to-back
varsity football champion. Huynh went on to receive a B.A. in ART from San Francisco
State University. In 2000 he returned to teach art at the high school and for the
last five years coached the diverse varsity football team consisting of many Asian,
Latino, Samoan, and African American players, who recently won another championship.
He was selected and inducted to the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He serves
as the Pendulum newspaper and Telescope yearbook advisor and has organized student
government leaders in volunteering for the Chinese New Year Parade.

Larry Yee, Math Teacher, George Washington High School

A native San Franciscan, Larry is a second-generation San Francisco public school
teacher and George Washington High School alumnus. He has spent 27 years teaching
for the SFUSD at middle schools and high schools, as well as teaching at the University
of San Francisco. He encourages students to be involved in school activities and
is committed to educating students, while providing the students with structure
and engaging lessons in his classroom to become the best they can and succeed to
their highest level. In addition to teaching, he has coached football and continues
to work innumerable hours with the boys' basketball program. His coaching and involvement
have touched the lives of countless Washington High School students, as he works
many hours on fundraising for both lacrosse and basketball through car washes and
technology recycling.

Jiun Chou Young, Immersion Chinese Teacher, Chinese American International School

Jiun has been developing and leading the middle school Chinese language and culture
curriculum at Chinese American International School (CAIS) for almost 20 years.
She is responsible for educating a generation of kids of all backgrounds in many
aspects of Chinese language and culture. Jiun also directs the annual school-wide
greeting lunar celebration attended by 1,500 people. Jiun is the lead chaperone
for dozens of students on educational trips to China. She also serves as a translator
for the school community.

Festival Helps Schools Raise Funds!

By Angela Pang

2013 AHSC School Raffle Participants receive their proceeds in a Fall ceremony at
Sports Basement. The raffle program is sponsored by Sterling Bank & Trust.

Since 2006, the Hill Physicians Asian Heritage Street Celebration Make Some Money
For Your School raffle program has raised approximately $100,000 for San Francisco
public and private schools.

Schools have used these funds to purchase new computers, take their student on field
trips and much more!

According to Principal JoLynn Washington of Jose Ortega Elementary School, who has
participated in the raffle program for the last five years, the money raised at
her school goes to purchase Chinese books for Mandarin immersion classrooms and
a Lunar New Year Fair, which is hosted annually to expose the student body to Chinese
culture.

Raffle tickets can be purchased throughout the day at the raffle ticket sales booth
located at Larkin and Golden Gate streets. Tickets are sold for $3, and $2 goes
directly back to each school. The extra $1 goes into a bonus fund in which the top-selling
school in each division - elementary, middle and high school, with a separate category
for private schools - will be awarded a $500 cash prize.

There will be multiple prize drawings throughout the 10th Annual Hill Physicians
Asian Heritage Street Celebration set for Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Civic Center.
Winners need not be present to win.

The program is managed by the AsianWeek Foundation, sponsored by Sterling Bank &
Trust and accounting services are provided by Louie and Wong LLP.
