Parking Plaza Signage

Honorable City Council Members:

I've asked staff about Parking Plaza signage and their answer is to take my
concerns to the City Council. To cut to the chase, my suggestion is to
increase the number of signs indicating the time limit. Other cities do this,
but Menlo Park does not.

In Menlo Park, signage is the bare minimum. What a driver finds is ONE SIGN
as you enter a parking plaza, located near the sidewalk. As a driver, if
you are watching on-coming traffic, pedestrians, etc. there is little time
to read the entire sign. You're in the driveway, past the sign very
quickly.

Once you park, it would be helpful to

1) Have a duplicate sign mounted on the back of the existing sign, facing
the parking lot. In this way, when you get out of your car, you can
clearly be reminded of the time limits.

2) In large size parking lots, which most of them are, post additional
signs mid-way on a steel pipe reminding folks of the time limit. Other cities
do this, Menlo Park does not.

Regarding signage, Menlo Park does the minimum. This may help city
government to actively give out 1,000's overtime parking tickets, but it may
convey the wrong message to shoppers, consumers and visitors to the downtown
area. Additional signage shows respect and courtesy. Additional signage may in
fact help encourage folks to move their cars on time.

The cost would be minimal to provide this service. To provide additional
signage would be thoughtful, helpful and convey a positive message. Other
cities have taken the leadership to do this. Will you?
