RE: Nealon Dog Park

Good morning. Thank you for your email. I want to assure you that there is no chance that the dog park at Nealon Park is going to close. Our goal is to create a state of the art dog park facility either at Nealon Park or another suitable location in town.

The current problem is that the dog park is impacting the baseball field in a negative way in terms of field maintenance and overall upkeep. With that in mind, the community services department met with the public works department to find a way to create a first class facility for both dog owners and sports field users. Creating a new dog park location was put on the Capital Improvement Projects List for 2017-2018 and will be on the city council agenda for the meeting on March 18th.

If approved by the council our department will undergo a thorough community engagement process that will seek input from all stakeholders in the dog park. When the city first started the dog park at Nealon Park over 10 years ago the decision to have the park from Monday-Friday from 8am-10am on the baseball field was a decision that would be re-visited a number of years later.

We are now at that time. I can envision a dog park that is open after work and in the evenings as well as on the weekends. It will be an area both owners and the dog can enjoy a safe and fun space to play. Dog parks have changed and grown a lot in the last 10 years in California. I am hoping that we can create such a facility here in Menlo Park.

I encourage you to come to the city council meeting on March 18th to share your thoughts. If you have any other questions please send me an email.

Dear Menlo Park City Council and Todd Zeo, Recreation Supervisor:

Please don't close the Nealon Dog Park - here are photos showing the joy of dogs and their owners enjoying Nealon! Please work with dog owners to address any concerns regarding use. Dog owners are more than happy to address concerns in order to continue use of Nealon. Thank you for your attention.
