To the Menlo Park City Council: I strongly support the proposal to name the San Mateo Drive bicycle / pedestrian bridge in Menlo Park after Mike Harding. I understand that Mike was instrumental in getting this bridge built.  I knew him for more than 30 years in the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club, in which he was an active leader.  I also knew him from his activities for bicycle advocacy in San Mateo County.  He was a delightful person. I greatly benefited from Mike's contributions to the San Mateo Drive bridge.  Before retiring, I commuted by bicycle from Redwood City to Stanford University for 15 years, rain or shine, day or night; I commuted to work by car only about one *day* a year.  All of this was possible because of that bike bridge.  I still often cycle over the bridge for getting to Stanford and points south, to places like the Stanford libraries, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, State Farm, the dentist, and so on; and en route to the bridge I will sometimes stop at Trader Joes or other businesses in Menlo Park.  That certainly has a significant impact on Menlo Park by keeping people like me from using a car on El Camino Real or Alameda de las Pulgas.
