Subject: Bike Bridge named for Mike Harding

Dear Menlo Park City Council,

We are San Mateo Dr. neighbors of Mike Harding who passed away in November 2013. Mike lived on San Mateo Dr. for many decades and was well known to the residents as a true community volunteer who demonstrated a generous and modest spirit. His dedication to Menlo Park and San Mateo County is well known to many cyclists and pedestrians who use the San Mateo Dr. bridge over the San Francisquito Creek. Mike was a soldier in the effort to get the bridge approved but a soldier of unique grace and modesty. His perseverance and patience calmed the concerns of residents near the bridge which contributed to the successful approval for this now popular asset to the neighborhood and the region.

We believe that naming the San Mateo Dr. bridge for Mike Harding would be a fitting tribute to his many years of contribution to the city. Mike was a long standing member of the city’s Bicycle Commission, the San Mateo County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. The council will undoubtedly be hearing from members of these organizations who will join us in this request. There would be no cost to the city because there has been a ground swell from those who admired Mike and the task of raising funds for a plaque would be handled by a private party.

We ask that the Council place our request on its agenda for consideration.

Thank you,

Rory and Lyla McInerney
