Dear City Council members,
I am in complete agreement with two Menlo Park citizens who recently have written to The Almanac to question spending by Menlo Park staff. An article in the same newspaper discusses how the city has spent $48,000 on a small revision of the city logo, an idea pushed by staff and the city manager. It is sad that staff members have little to do but spend money, perhaps because our city has more staff per capita than most local cities of our size.
But these expenditures are probably small compared to what we might save, were the City Council to take the step of hiring an independent auditor to study how Menlo Park might be made more efficient. Although there would be a cost associated with hiring an auditor, many local cities have actually saved money in the long run by hiring such a person, one who has no ties to anyone in our city, but can look at our situation and make sensible recommendations with complete candor.
I hope that you will consider taking such a step. nancy barnby, 169 Spruce Avenue
