Pedestrian and Bike Path into Bedwell Bayfront Park

Dear Menlo Park City Counsel, I have been a resident and home owner in this city for almost 7 years.  One of the great advantages of living in this city is Bedwell Bayfront Park and the recreational trail that runs from the park all the way down to University Avenue.  Rarely a week passes by that I do not walk or bike along the trail and into the park.  There is, however, a recurring issue that impacts the safety of pedestrians and bikers in the park and along the trail that I feel should be addressed by the City Counsel.  Currently, the city has programs giving away free compost and wood at the park.  Although I believe both programs are worthwhile, the location in which the compost and wood are being made available is becoming problematic. Specifically, both the wood and and compost are typically placed near the entry into the park and adjacent to the pedestrian and bike path from the recreational trail into the park.  Because of this, cars and trucks frequently park on the path, thereby creating a dangerous situation for bikers and walkers.  I have had several close calls with vehicles in and around the path when compost and/or wood is available.  Additionally, I ended up crashing while riding my bike along the path into the park a few months back because a truck came to a complete stop in front of the path while other vehicles were parked along the path collecting compost, thereby completely foreclosing any entrance into or exit from the path.  Today, a truck parked on the path completely blocking the path (see attached photo) in order to take advantage of the free wood available.  The persons driving the truck refused to move their truck and I ended up having to call the Menlo Park Police before the truck finally moved.  This should not be happening.  To address this issue, I am respectfully requesting that the City Counsel do the following: 1. Provide clear indications on and around the pedestrian and bike path from the recreational trail into Bedwell Bayfront Park that no vehicles should be parking on or blocking the path.  2. Move the location of the free compost and wood farther into the park, away from the entrance to the park and any pedestrian/bike paths to reduce the likelihood that vehicles will be blocking pedestrian/bike paths.  There are a couple of other open areas within the park that would provide sufficient space for the compost and wood and would allow vehicles to park nearby to take advantage of the free compost and wood.  Thank you. Sincerely, Erin Ming
