Solid waste collection fee increase for 2009 - 2010

Dear Council Members,

I find the proposed increase to be exorbitant. In an economy where prices are falling, salaries are being cut and people are losing their jobs, we cannot impose an 18% fee increase on people who have no choice in their garbage collection. I understand the cost structure for garbage collection. However, I should not be forced to pay for Allied Waste's poor cost controls and inefficiencies. My business manufactures electronics for other companies and I have been forced to LOWER my costs to maintain my customer base. It is happening up and down the supply chain of which we are a part. The same is happening in every industry. Please do not allow this outrageous price increase to happen. Why not open the contract for Menlo Park's waste collection to AW's competitors? That is how all industries work. They have a monopoly and it causes them to be less competitive than they would be if they had to contend with another provider.

Sincerely,

Rich Shane
