As owner of several residential and commercial properties in Menlo Park, I read with concern the editorial in the January 30, 2009 issue of the Daily Post newspaper, regarding the enormous and inappropriate 30 percent raise for sargeants in the Menlo Park Police Dept.
I strongly agree with this newspaper editorial that an increase of this magnitude is unwarranted, irrational, and irresponsible, especially with the city's $1.4 million budget deficit. I urge the council to rescind this unwise action, and to consider similar undesirable actions with taxpayers and the deteriorating economy in mind. To cave in to the irrational and excessive demands of the union is clearly unacceptable.
To the one council member who voted against this exorbitant increase, thank you for your fiscal acumen. To the other four councilmembers who voted for it, you are out of touch with the real world and need to come to grips with reality; I do not appreciate or approve of such irresponsibility.
