Hi: Is the meeting on the bicycle tunnel to be held this evening at 7
p.m. at the Rec. Ctr. still planned? Does anyone feel like a walk
across the park with the pops?
Would it be possible for someone with a copy of the earlier petitions to present them when there was a consensus that there should be no tunnel in the residential area of Linfield Oaks?
I recall that Vincent Bressler presented an additional 80 + list of names at a public meeting on the Willow crossing making a total of around 200 names.
At the first new tunnel location meeting recently the consultant appeared to know very little about its history, earlier opposition or future plans for the railroad and the new gym.
I would be glad to pick up the petitions to copy, return, and present this evening if no one else intends to do so.
I did ask the city representative to do this but haven't much hope he will do so. This information should be in the hands of the City Clerk.
It will be necessary for us to take drastic action if we are to face the construction and operation of a free-for-all gaping hole at Burgess Drive condominiums and apartments which will simply take people to El Camino (the real danger of noise/air pollution and accident prone traffic) while regional high speed bicyclists and other transients will continue to use our neighborhood for a parking hub and other activities.
Former mayor Mickie Winkler, with support of the whole council, tabled this tunnel question until the decision has been made on Ravenswood railroad grade separation priority project. This must be in the Minutes somewhere and should be furnished to the consultant. We will certainly need it for any further action.
It would be appreciated if those who do not live anywhere near the location of the newly proposed tunnel at Burgess Drive ask themselves if they would want months or years of unlivable construction of a tunnel at their doorsteps. This will cost millions of dollars with no safe or convenient destination through hostile territory where owners of land have previously denied its use. Even the railroad's plans are up in the air for extra rails and the certain catenaries for electrification. The environment (noise/air pollution and elctromagnetic field impacts) for humans around the railroad must be the primary consideration. People and housing should be kept at a safe distance.
This new proposal tunnel from bicycle activists includes a plaza on El Camino opposite Safeway. Should we add to the millions of dollars the cost of buying or taking this land by eminent domain if Stanford will not sell it, thereby destroying their plans for when the leases are bought up or expired?
I am on an antidote for a serious rash reaction to a penicillin drug taken for a tooth infection so I hope others will help.
I'd rather be enjoying a popsicle!
