Dear Council Members,
I am delighted to see that the City of Menlo Park is taking steps towards promoting sustainable building practices. After completing three remodeling projects over ten years, we are encouraged to see progress within the city to support more environmentally sensitive construction. During our first remodeling project, it felt like we were reinventing the wheel at every step to discover and adopt green alternatives, and occasionally trying to circumvent arcane regulations. Since then, practices once frowned upon, like salvaging and reusing lumber, are actively encouraged! It is clear to me that increasing access to information and reducing barriers to implementation are crucial to broad acceptance and implementation of sustainable building practices. Supporting the LEED standards for construction is an effective and efficient mechanism toward this goal. I urge the Council to invest the modest resources to support this program. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Kristin Kuntz-Duriseti
