Oak Knoll School - Oak Avenue Parking Lot

Members of the City Council,

I know you are aware of the traffic issues on Oak Avenue, and I appreciate your recent efforts to add calming measures to this narrow street which already exceeds its recommended traffic load.

Unfortunately, Menlo Park School District continues to move ahead with its plans for a new Oak Avenue parking lot, to be left open for after-hours and weekend use. The use of school facilities will certainly increase with the addition of the new multi and soccer field. Oak Avenue risks becoming an evening and weekend parking strip as families access school grounds through this new school entry. The District's statement that they will keep the parking lot gated during school hours does nothing to mitigate the impact of lines of cars parked on Oak Avenue for after-hours and weekend events held at the multi or the new soccer field.

The attached photo shows Oak Avenue with street parking. Parked cars block the single sidewalk, there is little visibility, the street is narrowed, pedestrians and cyclists are forced into the street. Creating an entry point to school grounds through the proposed lot will add a new risk as pedestrians cross Oak Avenue mid block for after-hours and weekend school access.. Further, Oak Avenue will become even more dangerous for those pedestrians, cyclists, and cars traveling to and from Sand Hill Road.

I respectfully ask the City Council to deny the Oak Avenue curb cut.
