I learned that senior city administrative and planning staff met early this
past week with potential developers and owners of the vacant property at 389
El Camino. On the table was a new proposal to build medical offices and a
new Ronald McDonald House. Looking for a quick green-light to pursue this
option, they were encouraged to contact our five council members to seek
council reactions to the proposal.
I am astonished that these actions were taken in light of the well-publicized public visualization process now underway for the El Camino. This sidestepping, however well-intentioned, undermines the public confidence in this important process that shapes El Camino as a community asset for the next 50 years.
If the contacts were limited to 'educating' the council members, the proper way to educate the council is in a public study session. If the purpose is to poll the council members on their support for a project that hasn't seen the light of day, well, the public is shortchanged. Unfortunately the border between educating and polling is murky.
