Members of the City Council, Mr. McClure, and Mr. Steffens,
I understand you received a copy of Rich Rollins' email in which he expressed his strong opinions about how to work with you all.
I can't discredit Rich - his energy and willingness to stand up to what has felt like the Goliath of the School District has given me the sense that speaking out in community decisions might actually make a difference. If my quavering voice when I commented at Tuesday's Council meeting is any indication, getting involved in public policy isn't my natural tendency. My style is often very different than is Rich's, but I know that his commitment has helped me stay in this process and continue to speak out.
I share Rich's frustration with and distrust of the District with regard to renovation of Oak Knoll School. I didn't feel this way a year ago; unfortunately, I do now. I do not, however, question the integrity or commitment of City Council Members. I have only been impressed with Council and Staff's thorough and thoughtful review of the District's Negative Declaration. I only hope that the School District will show more respect for City comments than they have for those of neighbors. I am hopeful that despite the frustrations Rich expressed in his email, we all will continue to have a voice in this process.
We have every reason to be concerned. The District is pushing ahead unchecked, and timing is critical. Demolition of the playground and removal of the Heritage Oak are slated to begin June 15. I ask that you:
Continue with submission of Staff comments to the Negative Declaration. Continue to consider potential impacts of District plans on traffic patterns and volume, bicycle and pedestrian safety, and community resources. Take a firm stand on the encroachment and right of way items within City purview. Thank you.
