Dear Members of the City Council,

I am heartened to read that the Council is proposing a Declaration for a Climate Emergency and that the Environmental Quality Commission is recommending that the City institute a zero-carbon target by 2030. For the sake of my three-year-old grandson and all his peers, who may have to grow up in a world of heat, sea-level rise, apocalyptic fire seasons, and all the rest, I support these actions. While one city’s actions pale in the face of the vastness of the problem, the example we can set is huge and can give birth to hope.

I am also pleased to know that you are collaborating with the County and 1,000 other jurisdictions to declare a climate emergency. I’m glad that locally, and in a broadening circle, you, our leaders, are representing—and decisively acting for—those of us who recognize that we are in the midst of an existential crisis.

Thank you for your leadership in these crucial issues.

Sincerely,

Judy Windt
