Dear Mayor Mueller and City Council Members,
I’m writing to express strong support for the carefully crafted amendments to local building codes proposed by staff<https://www.menlopark.org/DocumentCenter/View/23408/J2-20191119-CC-2019-California-Building-Standards-Code-first-reading> for Council consideration tomorrow evening. These amendments provide important improvements to local regulations that will make new construction safer and more sustainable in Menlo Park.

In particular, we are grateful for the proposed change to the term “new construction” for which green building “Reach Codes” will apply, so that any major alterations, remodels or new construction covering 75 percent or more of a home or building are considered new construction for purposes of green building and safety. Since many new homes in Menlo Park involve reconstruction of the majority of an old home, often leaving just one original wall in place, this amended definition of “new construction” captures the spirit and intent of the Reach Codes and new fire safety codes.

We appreciate staff’s thoughtful approach to amending the building codes to best suit and serve local conditions in Menlo Park as well as the city’s sustainability goals.
