Hello! I have rented the same apartment in Menlo Park since 2007. By a stroke of insane luck, the monthly rent for my one bedroom near downtown was $1,050, a bit below market rate. The building owners offered to take out the carpet for another $30 a month. As a new teacher in Ravenswood, I preferred to keep the extra money. Of course now that my carpets are 12 years older, I'm wishing I had spent the $30 a month.

The current building owners, the adult children of the people I originally rented from, have offered to remove the carpet and put in a dish washer if I move out for a month, at my own expense. Since my rent is now more than twice what it was when I moved in, I do not have the extra income to fund such a venture. Also, when I moved back in, my rent would go up to closer to market value. Since I have neighbors in my building with similar apartments who are paying three times what my rent used to be, I am afraid to see what my new rent would be. So I keep my old, dirty carpet and hope that the owners don't increase my rent by more than $100 a year, which is more than my salary goes up yearly.

My dad grew up in Menlo Park and so did I, after the age of 5. I love living here! Strong rent protections will make it more likely that I can stay.

Thank you for your help!
