Dear Council members,

I read recently in a local newspaper that two council members have expressed interest in trying to help our downtown merchants. Good idea! I suggest you start by finding more parking for their customers. And by stopping eliminating parking spaces to provide bike lanes and bike parking.

Our merchants’ customers drive their cars downtown. As much as you might like them to bike or walk, the reality is they don’t. They drive. In order to shop there they must be able to park at least reasonably close (within a block or two) to their destination. Right now, particularly between 11-2, that is not always possible.

We have too many vacant stores on Santa Cruz Avenue, with more on the way. Let’s get serious about providing parking.
