tonight's agenda H-1

Dear Honorable Mayor and Councilmembers,

I think your review of City Council agenda topics would be far more
productive if the information in the staff report were presented in a
format that makes clear what is being done in support of the Council's
priorities. I am a firm believer in measuring and monitoring what one
wishes to manage. The long laundry list of topics in the staff report does
not help you manage what is being done.

Ideally there would be target dates for milestones that would accomplish
the Council's priorities. And ideally there would be an indication of
topics that are likely to be more meaty or controversial. The rest could be
on a separate list of Other Things.

Additionally, to be optimally useful, the list also would provide tentative
timing for major topics of interest to the Council and the community.

In the past, the City published a Tentative Calendar with major topics and
tentative dates, serving as a headsup to look for staff reports and
meetings. Why can't this be done? This list should be an aid to you, and
it needs restructured to become a useful tool.

Respectfully submitted,
Patti Fry
