Support for REACH Codes Proposal

Dear Mayor Mueller and City Council Members,

As a former 8-year Environmental Quality Commissioner and two time Chair, I am grateful to you for the leadership you are taking in addressing climate change.

Your leadership was spotlighted in today’s Mercury News front page article, which demonstrates that innovative action taken by the Menlo Park community can have an impact far greater than our population. A favorable vote on tonight’s REACH Code proposal will be a very strong statement to the numerous Bay Area cities considering similar measures.

Many citizens have already highlighted the importance of greatly reducing and eliminating natural gas usage from our buildings. This is the most critical measure that can be taken right now on the path to net zero carbon emissions.

This net zero path is critical toward long-term sustainability of civilization on our plane. Success requires elimination of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, removal of the excess one trillion metric tons of CO2 from the earth’s atmosphere that is currently heating the planet, and adaptation to climate change.

While we cannot do it all in Menlo Park, our community’s leadership in first supporting our electricity provider to commit to 100% non-renewals, and now the path toward full electrification of our buildings, are necessary and important steps on this path toward a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.

Please vote to support the REACH Code measure as proposed.

Many thanks,
Mitch Slomiak
