GGNRA Developing New Park-wide Plan
Background
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is in the middle of a multi-year planning process to create a new General Management Plan that will guide decision-making for the next 20 years. This new plan builds upon the visionary 1980 plan, but addresses significant changes like growing visitation, increased knowledge of the area's ecological and historical significance, and recent additions of land in San Mateo County. The planning process is also examining how to manage Rancho Corral de Tierra - 4,200 acres of open space stretching across the western slopes of Montara Mountain from McNee Ranch State Park to El Granada. The area is presently managed by P.O.S.T., but will soon to become the park's southernmost unit.
Why this is important
Some of the lands in San Mateo County have been a part of GGNRA since 1984 but have never had a management plan.
What's happening
Presently, the park planning team is exploring 4 broad concepts for management: "Connecting People with the Park", "Preserving & Enjoying Coastal Ecosystems", "Focusing on National Treasures", and "Collaborating Regionally." The concepts are described on the National Park Service public information website http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?parkId=303 <http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?parkId=303&projectId=15075.%20> &projectId=15075.
What's next
The next steps entail developing and mapping these ideas to communicate more fully the kinds of resource management activities and recreational experiences that would be available under each concept. These preliminary alternatives will be the focus of the newsletter planned for April 2008. Along with the newsletter, the park is planning a series of public workshops to discuss the alternatives.
What you can do
You can participate in the planning process by attending a workshop, reviewing the newsletter, and sending the park your comments. The park also encourages you to sign up for email notices using the yellow icon on the park's website, http://www.nps.gov/goga/parkmgmt/planninglanding.htm.
