Cannabis Dispensary Ban

Unfortunately I was out of town for the June 18th city council meeting that had this topic on the agenda. I would have liked to attend to state my opinion for the record. I am NOT in favor of a permanent cannabis dispensary ban. On the contrary, as an almost 30 year resident homeowner of the Allied Arts neighborhood in MP, I would much rather shop in my own community than drive all the way to San Jose to Airfield Supply, Inc. to purchase my CBD creme for pain and arthritis. Even though I don’t use marijuana recreationally now I am in no way against it, any more than I would be against selling or drinking alcohol.

From the research I’ve done on my own there’s no evidence to support that dispensaries lower property values, increase underage marijuana use or become a beacon for seedier populations or crime. Cannabis dispensaries are honest, upstanding businesses that provide a service much like Walgreen’s or BevMo. For a city always on the lookout for a tax benefit to expand its coffers, this seems like an obvious plus. We are always admonished to, “Shop Locally!” I always try to.

Please reconsider your vote to go ahead with a permanent ban. Instead please survey the citizens of our city and find out what people really think, really want. A majority voted to make cannabis sale and use legal in California. Please let’s find out what that really means rather than just making assumptions.

Thank you for your consideration,
Lyn Napel
