Dear Councilmembers,

Please support the Reach Codes proposed by Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) and San Mateo County’s Office of Sustainability.

It is a route to reduce carbon emissions in new buildings, beginning January 2020. These new building standards will reduce the likelihood of methane (“natural”) gas leaks that contribute to rising global temperatures, as well as create a safety hazard - And they will reduce the cost of construction if builders do not need gas piping.

As an incentive towards joining together with other cities in Silicon Valley to adopt the proposed Reach Codes, if our city signs a Letter of Intent to do so, Menlo Park will also earn a $10,000 bonus! from PCE to support the implementation of these stronger codes - training inspectors, writing manuals, educating contractors, etc.

For more info, see https://peninsulareachcodes.org

Our community’s future and the lives of our children & grandchildren depend upon Earth having a stable climate! Adopting these Reach Codes is an important step towards making the transisiton to a renewable energy economy that will have negligible carbon emissions and ease the growing climate chaos.

It’s the least we can do! (I'll be writing again about solar, and better demolition codes with oversight that include recycling/reuse/less waste!)
