Dear City Council, May 21, 2019

I’m writing to respectfully request that you remove Item F2 (purchase of 8 gasoline hybrid police cars) from the May 21 consent calendar and look at alternative possibilities that provide additional benefits more in keeping with the recently adopted April 16, 2019 Climate and Sustainability Resolution.

Calculations in the attached analysis tool are adjustable and my findings are that converting the purchase to:

 1) Electric Plug-in Hybrid cars would save more than $140,000 in operating costs and reduce pollution equivalent to 3 of the base cars while converting the purchase to

 2) Full electric vehicles (EVs) with many additional co-benefits would reduce operating costs by more than $460,000 and reduce pollution exposure of officers and community by 7.8 equivalent base cars.

These dollar savings, health improvements, carbon savings, and demonstrated care and leadership are all important in Menlo Park.

I will make myself available to staff and council to answer questions about the attached analysis in the coming days and weeks.

Thank you for considering these suggestions.

 Best Regards,

Tom Kabat
