carbon credits

Honorable Mayor and Council,

The idea of purchasing credits through a carbon program is tempting for an individual and in some cases an organization. However, money for carbon capture, among the highest of green goals, is admirably effective when spent planting trees. Unlike technology opportunities in dairy farms, trees can be planted within the city limits for the direct benefit of our citizens in terms of air quality as well as beauty.

Additionally, the environmental impact of deferred maintenance is significant. If for example we maintained our roads so that they didn't need foundation rebuild due to erosion, the net carbon impact of maintenance is far less than removal of failed road surfaces, recompaction and full repaving operations. There are many similar issues like delayed replacement of old vehicles and low efficiency building and service equipment.

I urge you to keep our tax money and good intentions within Menlo Park, and take care of our facilites and infrastructure at the same time.

Henry Riggs
