Pursuit & Planet Rated Police Vehicles

Dear Esteemed Mayor and the Menlo Park City Council,

Thank you again for your leadership on Earth Day in passing a nation leading resolution to make drastic cuts in carbon emissions. This document recognized, what we all do in our great green state, that a key decarbonization pathway is to electrify our transpiration sector.

I recently learned that tonight you will be approving a budget appropriation for 8 police vehicles that will get 17-24 mpg. With pursuit ready vehicles PHEV available that rate up to 40combined mpg including this Ford Model - https://www.ford.com/police-vehicles/hybrid-police-responder/ your action would contradict the language in our recent climate focused resolution. Cities all over the Bay are looking at purchasing PHEVs and EVs for their public safety fleets, and of equal import right sizing these vehicles and fleets to minimize unnecessary purchases and surplussing vehicles that have remaining useful life. Have we also taken this step?

Thank you for your careful consideration of this 20+ year purchase that impacts the health of our planet, streets and citizens. If advancing the purchase I hope it is under a full lifecycle cost scenario that considers the cost of carbon and air quality that would both be co-benefits of a fuel efficient PHEV or fully electric model for non-pursuit police use.
