Transit Oriented Development - Planning Commission Meeting 3/25/08 SM

From: Margaret Petitjean <MPetitjean_at_(domain_name_was_removed)>
Date: Tue Mar 25 2008 - 10:40:52 PST

In San Mateo deliberations on the Bay Meadows Development please share with your colleagues and commissioners the statement from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission publication: New Places, New Choices -The Challenges for TOD - Fulfilling TOD's Promise Will Take Careful Planning:

"Some possible TOD sites in the Bay Area may be located near abandoned industrial sites, freeways, or busy arterials and other sources of pollution. All potential hazards must be adequately addressed
before development can occur at these sites."

A certified Build It Green speaker pointed out in public forum that health deteriorates exponentially 8 blocks from such pollution.

The article in the press also makes it clear that there should be no developments around the heavy rail and freight railroads until Caltrain's plans have been finalized and completed.

At present all transit is toxic and noisy. H.U.D. guidelines should be studied for noise regulations.

It is presumptuous for cities to make plans based upon what they expect Caltrain to do when the railroad officials don't know themselves whether the bond measure for high speed rail will be approved in Novem ber.
