Dear Mayor Mueller and Members of the City Council,

Thank you for your commitment to making Menlo Park more affordable. As you
know, the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County (HLC) is dedicated
to supporting communities and their leaders in building and preserving more
affordable homes. Alongside numerous community members and community
groups, HLC spoke to the City Council in March about the need for more
affordable homes in the downtown area of Menlo Park. Specifically, we would
like the council to identify a site for affordable housing in the downtown
neighborhood. Dedicating public land allows affordable builders to create
the greatest number of homes with the deepest levels of affordability.
Additionally, we must look at changing height limits and increasing density
in order to maximize the limited land we have available. As this City
Council reviews the Downtown Specific Plan we believe this should remain at
the center of your work. Although land use decisions often divide community
members, bringing more transit-oriented, affordable homes to downtown Menlo
Park is an issue that is bringing neighbors together.

Thank you for your consideration.
