Appreciation and Encouragement - Resolution on Climate and Sustainability

Dear Mayor Mueller and Councilmembers,

Thank you for adopting the Resolution on Climate and Sustainability for Earth Day.

The October 2018 IPCC report was a major wake-up call. Personally and professionally, I have renewed my investments in reducing our climate impacts and I am grateful that the City of Menlo Park is doing so as well. The only way we will reach the necessary reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions is through big, bold, government action.

I am on my way home from DC, where I lobbied Congress to support the Green New Deal, because it lays out a framework for the kind of big, bold, and equitable solutions that are commensurate with the scale of the challenge.

But we cannot wait for Congress.

Menlo Park must act boldly, and I support all of the elements outlined in the resolution:

  * Adoption of a new Climate Action Plan
  * Carbon neutrality in the short term, and carbon reductions in the future
  * Sustainable building codes
  * Zero Carbon building codes such as the cost effective title 24 Energy Reach Codes
  * Assisting home- and building-owners in upgrades that phase out fossil fuels including natural gas
  * Committing to public outreach, information and education about the urgency of climate responses, City policies and strategies to advance sustainability goals, and City performance towards those goals.
  * Administrative review of all policies to determine their climate impacts.
  * Ensuring that disadvantaged communities are kept central to the planning process and that their needs are prioritized.
  * Implementation of transportation policies to eliminate GHG emissions
  * Discourage use of toxic chemicals in homes and businesses
  * Protect open space

I would ADD that an important part of the climate solution NOT mentioned in the resolution is abundant housing at all levels of affordability, near public transit and services, especially for very low income residents, who are most likely to use public transportation, bike or walk, instead of driving.

Thank you for your commitment to our shared future.

Karen Grove
