Congestion Relief/Management Vote

Ladies and Gentlemen of the City Council,

I am writing both as a resident of Menlo Park , as well as the President of
the 122 unit Menlo Commons Homeowner's Association located at 2140 Santa
Cruz Ave in Menlo Park. I applaud the Council's focus on congestion
mitigation efforts, but am deeply concerned that the discussion has not
explicitly stated as an overarching goal the SAFETY of pedestrians,
cyclists as well as drivers of motor vehicles in pursuit of congestion
mitigation. In any number of instances diminishing congestion has the
potential to increase risk--as well as inconvenience for those not driving.
Improving sidewalks, creating bike lanes and narrowing certain surface
streets which today are "raceways" for drivers are all viable ways to
discourage vehicle traffic AND increase safety.

I urge the Council to emphasize EXPLICITLY that safety of pedestrians,
cyclists and motor vehicles should be the overarching determinant when
considering traffic congestion management. My fellow residents and I will
be anxiously awaiting your action on this important measure.
